Naarderstraat, Hilversum
Downtown boogie woogie
This residential building in downtown Hilversum, with its large variety of town houses, maisonnettes and apartments, was awarded the Hilversum Architecture Prize in 2010. The jury’s report highly values the balanced and intelligent design that, within a tight budget, combines all the area’s conditions into a coherent structure.
A dark brick skin with a composition of white concrete window frames ties all dwellings together into one urban fragment in which nevertheless each dwelling is unique and recognizable. Inside this ‘rough’ skin, wooden façades and a wooden deck create a soft collective interior space with private patios and terraces. Cars are parked underneath the deck on ground level.
