Kolenhaven Bridge
Delft
A beacon for the University City of Delft
In an industrial part of town, in a bend of the Rhine-Schie canal, lies the new Kolenhaven bridge. The planning of a new bus lane made the old double Dutch lifting bridge unsuitable and in need of replacement. The new bridge is three times as wide and has a larger opening span. To preserve the characteristic silhouette of the old bridge the concept of a Dutch lifting bridge was maintained. The design of the Kolenhaven bridge blends in seamlessly with the winding track of the new bus lane. Because the bridge is at the edge of the town of Rijswijk it provides a gateway into Delft. The lightweight curved balancing plate with spokes is a contemporary answer to the industrial character of the site. It creates a beacon for the university-city of Delft.
