Natural daylight plays a vital role in the relationship between the individual and his environment.
Together with the seasons and geographical location, the changes in the light over the course of the day give the individual a sense of time and space. The perception of colour and light is a sensory action as it temporarily stimulates visual triggers that result from and are related to prior experiences, memories and mental processes.

In architecture, issues concerning rationality and functionality are easier to resolve than issues concerning emotions, as the latter are linked to subjective opinions, the social context and psychological/physiological effects. However, it is this emotional aspect that defines the atmosphere of a particular space.

When designing a colour/light scheme, architects, interior designers and light and colour designers work together with the aim of harmonising the elements light - perception - space and light – material – colour. Aspects such as the sensory experience as well as the quality, functionality and identity of the space are also addressed. During this process, the various needs of human beings, personal identity and individual expression are considered. Alongside this, the orientation is improved, concentration and social interaction are promoted and the space is researched.
